June 9, 2010. This news just in from Massachusetts Climate Action:
The first Senate skirmish in the 'battle' over climate legislation will happen tomorrow
[Thursday, June 10], as Senators take up the Murkowski "Disapproval Petition," which would
reverse the EPA's Endangerment Finding with respect to greenhouse gases and essentially bar further EPA regulation on climate change.
This vote is very much a test vote, to see where some of the more moderate Senators will
line up on the Climate and Clean Energy bill, which is expected to be brought to the Senate
floor within the next several weeks. Most followers of Congress believe the Disapproval
Petition would not pass the House or Senate with veto-proof majorities and would likely be
vetoed by the President.
The interesting news is that Sen. Murkowski, an Alaska Republican, has all but three
Republican Senators as co-sponsors. Those three are New England folks Maine Senators
Snowe and Collins, and Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown.
Now is the time to let your Senator know that you support science-based climate action, and that disarming the EPA (particularly without any alternative plan, like a cap and trade
program) is not a positive step.
