2020 ACTION REPORT
Update on Previous Monthly Action Issues
December 2019 & October 2020: New START Treaty. President Trump did not extend this important treaty with Russia which will expire in February 2021. President-Elect Biden has stated he will ratify this treaty and Russia will likely agree.
January, August, September & October: We urged participation in the national election through one of several organizations: Vote Forward, Environmental Voter Project, Council for a Livable World & Vote Save America. Together, we created the largest turnout of progressive voters in our nation’s history! The Environmental Voter Project alone reported that their supporters made over 35 million calls and sent over 9 million texts leading up to the election.
February 2019: Stop Trump’s Dangerous Proposal to Gut the National Environmental Protection Act—Submit Public Comment. In August, President Trump unilaterally weakened one of the nation’s bedrock conservation laws, the National Environmental Policy Act, limiting public review of federal infrastructure projects to speed up the permitting of freeways, power plants and pipelines.
March 2019: Come to the Anti-Nuclear Weapons Rally in NYC, Sunday, April 26th. The March & Rally were cancelled due to the pandemic.
April 2019: Methane—the Badly Overlooked Greenhouse Gas (GHG). You asked your Representatives to co-sponsor and vote for HR2711, The Methane Waste Prevention Act of 2019 to limit emissions of methane from oil and gas drilling. 63 Reps co-sponsored the bill, however it did not pass the House and there was no companion bill in the Senate.
May 2019: Congress: Don’t Withhold Payment to WHO when it’s Most Needed. President Trump suspended funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) because according to Trump, “WHO's role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus."
June 2019: Co-sponsor the REWIND Bill. This bill aimed to prevent fossil fuel companies from receiving funds provided for under previous coronavirus aid packages, halt the sale of new fossil fuel leases, and prevent the Trump administration from enriching fossil fuel companies in a number of other ways. It was not brought for floor votes in the House or Senate.
July 2019: President Trump, Do Not Start Testing Nuclear Weapons!. It was reported that the Trump administration discussed whether to conduct the first U.S. nuclear test since 1992. As far we know, no test was conducted.
December 2019: Nicaragua Hit By 2 Major Hurricanes in 2 Weeks—Support Oxfam to Help with their Relief Efforts in Nicaragua. We know your donations to Oxfam to support their relief efforts in Nicaragua were helpful and greatly appreciated.
