Tell P&G’s New CEO: Stop Flushing Our Forests for Profit
BACKGROUND: Procter & Gamble (P&G), the maker of tissue products like Charmin toilet paper, is fueling the degradation of Canada's boreal forests, just to flush it down the toilet. P&G's CEO, Shailesh Jejurikar, has led the company since 2021. It's past time for him to take real action on deforestation.
Each year, more than 1 million acres of Canada’s boreal northern forest are cut down, in part to meet demand for disposable paper products.
These forests store enormous amounts of carbon, provide critical habitat for threatened species like boreal caribou, and are home to hundreds of Indigenous communities.
When clear-cut, carbon stored for millennia is released into the atmosphere, accelerating the climate crisis.
As one of the world's largest tissue manufacturers, P&G has both the responsibility and the capacity to shift to sustainable alternatives. Their Charmin Ultra Bamboo product proves sustainable options already exist.
ACTION: Email Procter & Gamble’s CEO, Shailesh Jejurikar, and demand that P&G:
Stop sourcing fiber from old-growth boreal forests for tissue products.
Rapidly increase recycled content and sustainable fiber in all tissue products.
Commit to a public timeline for transitioning to 100% sustainable sources.
