The organization I founded 24 years ago—20/20 Vision—has recently become a project of EarthAction and we’re relaunching it as 2020 Action. Our goal is to provide ordinary citizens a way to make a big difference for peace and the environment in just 20 minutes a month carved from our busy lives. We want people to “work smarter, not harder.”
Over the last 24 years 20/20 Vision has helped hundreds of thousands of citizens send timely and powerful messages to their elected representatives. But the economic challenges of last year proved too great, and 20/20 Vision ‘closed its doors.’
“But wait!” I said. “Helping citizens communicate with policymakers about peace and environment issues is even more important now that it was in 1986.” 20/20’s Board of Directors agreed and voted to turn 20/20 over to EarthAction, another organization I co-founded in 1992 and of which I am Executive Director.
In its new incarnation, 2020 Action has moved from an expensive office and all-paid staff in D.C. to a cost-effective approach powered largely by volunteer grassroots activists, supervised by my professional staff in Amherst, Massachusetts.
While many activists have turned to online petitions and emails, legislators report these don’t count much. A short personal letter or a quick phone call has much more impact. But who to contact, and what to say? 2020 Action will answer those questions.
Our volunteers—most with 20+ years experience as grassroots organizers—will research monthly actions by contacting a dozen top national security and environment groups. Our focus will be on the greatest threats we face: nuclear weapons and climate chaos. Based on what issues are timely, they will craft an action postcard that will include a summary of the issue and suggested action, and the policymaker’s contact information. Each postcard, sent to our members via post or email, will feature a photograph that celebrates the beauty and wonder of the natural world.
In addition, our new website will feature each month’s 2020 Action postcard along with related information and important links.
At a time when the influence of corporations on our public policies is growing, 2020 Action will put citizens back in the conversation. At a time when our government is beginning to take much needed action on nuclear weapons policies, 2020 Action will make your voice heard.
We invite you to join 2020 Action. We have returned the membership fee to the original 1986 price of $20/year. As a member, you will receive one 2020 Action postcard each month either by mail, email, or both—your choice. Each postcard will contain everything you need to send an effective, short personal message—by letter, email, fax, or phone—to a policymaker facing a critical decision on an important environment or peace issue. Each month our 2020 Action postcard lets you act independently yet in unison with thousands of other concerned citizens. Click the JOIN button to become a member.
In addition to becoming a member we hope you will consider making a donation to help us spread the word about 2020 Action. Click the DONATE button to contribute. Thanks for your generosity.
With warm regards,
Lois Barber

P.S. If you can contribute $1,000 or more to help us launch 2020 Action, we will be pleased to send you an 11”x14” signed copy of the photo of the Japanese Maple on the front on the April 2020 Action postcard. Together, even in the midst of our busy lives, individual voices can become a loud, clear and united voice for peace and the environment
