September 2025: Call For Reps To Support The Nuclear Weapons Abolition And Conversion Act, H.R. 1888
BACKGROUND: July 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of the US bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To solemnize this occasion, Representative Jim McGovern (MA) hosted a Special Order Hour on the US House floor focused on the dangers of nuclear weapons. McGovern set the scene of the increasing threat from nuclear weapons in the current global military landscape. Speakers addressed the increasing risks of nuclear escalation and called for the United States to support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). To date, 73 nations have ratified this treaty, but not yet any nuclear armed nations. The US could and should lead on this issue. McGovern stated, “We won’t get there overnight, but we should not abandon the goal.”
He called on the President to commit to his earlier statements on denuclearizing, saying President Trump “has the opportunity to make nuclear threat reduction part of his legacy.” He called out the massive recent budget increases for nuclear weapons programs, and he closed his introduction with a plea on the moral imperative to “commit ourselves to the elimination of nuclear weapons.”
He pointed out that there are an estimated 13,400 nuclear weapons in the world today. 90% of them are in the arsenals of the US and Russia. The rest belong to the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel, and North Korea.
